Introduction
Centre Approves Rs 14,000 Crore Investment
In a major development for Odisha, the Central Government has given its nod to four significant national highway projects with a combined estimated cost of Rs 14,000 crore. The approval came during a meeting between chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi.
Key Projects Approved
The green light has been given to the following projects:
- Bhubaneswar-Puri National Highway: This 60 km stretch will be expanded to six lanes at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore.
- Kesinga-Junagarh National Highway: This highway will be upgraded to a four-lane road with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore.
- Chandikhole-Barbil National Highway: A massive eight-lane expansion is planned for this highway at a cost of Rs 10,000 crore.
- Khurda-Nayagarh National Highway: This highway will be converted into a four-lane road with an estimated cost of Rs 1,100 crore.
A Strategic Move for Odisha
These projects are set to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth in the state. The improved infrastructure will facilitate smoother transportation of goods and people, attracting investments and creating new job opportunities.
Broader Vision for Odisha's Connectivity
Beyond the four approved projects, Odisha has presented ambitious plans for several other highway corridors to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth. These include:
- Motu-Tiringi Atal Expressway: A 969 km, Rs 15,000 crore project to connect the state's west and east.
- Jharsuguda-Balasore Highway: A proposed 383 km highway with an estimated cost of Rs 7,500 crore.
- Nuapada-Astaranga Highway: A 491 km road requiring an investment of Rs 9,500 crore.
- Brundababahal-Gopalpur Highway: A 357 km project with an estimated cost of Rs 6,800 crore.
- Sambalpur-Satabhaya Highway: A 404 km road requiring an investment of Rs 5,477 crore.
Ring Roads for Enhanced Connectivity
The state has also proposed two grand ring roads:
- Berhampur-Jeypore Ring Road: A 287 km project with an estimated cost of Rs 9,000 crore.
- Jeypore-Rourkela Ring Road: A 638 km project with an estimated cost of Rs 2,500 crore.
These proposed projects, once realized, will significantly enhance Odisha's road infrastructure, facilitating seamless movement of people and goods, and driving economic growth across the state.

Quote:BHUBANESWAR: At least 18 projects including two proposed highways of Odisha were evaluated and approved at the Network Planning Group (NPG) meeting under the PM GatiShakti initiative at New Delhi on Friday.
The projects include Sambalpur Ring Road and Cuttack-Paradip corridor. With this, a total of six highway projects of the state have been accorded in-principle approval in a month.
The four-lane Sambalpur Ring Road project measuring around 35.38 km ... will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1,333 crore and the work is expected to begin soon.
Similarly, the four-lane Cuttack-Paradip corridor spanning 86.79 km ...
Last month, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had approved four highway projects worth Rs 15,000 crore proposed by the state government.
The approved projects are
- six-lane 60-km Bhubaneswar-Puri highway at an estimated cost of Rs 1,800 crore,
- 200-km Chandikhole-Barbil at Rs 10,000 crore,
- four-lane 54-km Khurda-Nayagarh NH-57 at Rs 1,100 crore and
- four-lane 46-km Kesinga-Junagarh NH-26 at Rs 1,000 crore.
The state government has also submitted proposals for four more national highway projects. - The 383-km Jharsuguda-Balasore highway at an estimated cost of Rs 7,500 crore,
- 491-km Nuapada-Astaranga highway at Rs 9,500 crore,
- 357-km Brundababahal-Gopalpur highway at Rs 6,800 crore and
- 404-km Sambalpur-Satabhaya highway at Rs 5,477 crore, are awaiting the approval of the Centre.
