Universities and University like institutes
#1
It may come as a surprise to many, but as of today (25th November 2022) the greater Bhubaneswar area has 27 approved universities and university like institutes; 24 of which are operational and three of them (Odia University, Odisha University of Health Sciences, and Jagadguru Kripalu University) close to being operational.  In addition there are four university campuses of multi-campus universities with HQ outside Odisha. The detailed list is at https://www.orissalinks.com/archives/7524 .

In terms of sheer numbers this number is greater than number of universities in Pune and Mumbai, and similar to the number of universities at Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad. Delhi-NCR and Chennai have a lot more.

Prior to 1999 there were only three universities in greater Bhubaneswar: Utkal University, OUAT and Sri Jagannath Sanskrit  University. See https://www.orissalinks.com/archives/6243 for the timeline of how this number went from 3 to 27. Some key milestones are: (i) KIIT getting deemed university status in 2004, thus heralding the first private university in Odisha, (ii) Establishment of NISER in 2007, (iii) Establishment of IIT Bhubaneswar in 2008, and (iv) Establishment of AIIMS Bhubaneswar in 2012.
