Proposed: N: Balasore - Gopinathpur Nilgiri line and beyond (to Betnoti)
Posted by: Chitta - 01-14-2024, 03:59 AM - Forum: New Lines - Replies (1)

Balasore - Gopinathpur Nilgiri line is now complete and MEMUs have been introduced. See more about this at https://www.telegraphindia.com/india/ash...id/1993546 Following is an excerpt.

Quote:Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Saturday inaugurated the 18 km stretch of Gopinathpur Nilgiri-Balasore passenger railway line and flagged off a newly introduced MEMU train.

... Speaking of the railway projects in Odisha, Vaishnaw said the Jaleswar-Chandaneswar rail route survey work has been completed and it will be extended up to Digha in West Bengal very soon.

An official of S E Rly said, three pairs of MEMU passenger specials will run on a daily basis between Gopinathpur Nilgiri-Balasore from January 14. The trains will have total eight coaches - two motor coaches and six trailer coaches.

The old railway track was built in 1909 by the British during the beginning of 19th century. It was meant to ferry granite stones and forest products from Niligiri area to Kolkata via Balasore. Later, the railway line was abandoned and became almost defunct.

Survey for a line connecting Gopinathpur Nilgiri to Betnoti in the Rupsa-Bangiriposi segment is in the cards. See https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city...827143.cms

As per https://www.telegraphindia.com/india/ash...id/1993546 Rail Minister "Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurates Gopinathpur Nilgiri-Balasore railway line, and flags off MEMU train". The location of this 16 km line is shown below.

The Odisha government should facilitate development around this line (may be even make also a road parallel to it) and make this line as the first metro line corridor of this area with stops every 2-3 kms.
